Rare early Hammered coins
Probably the most famous date in the entire English history is 1066. That is when the first Norman king took the throne, and modern history, so to speak, first took shape. For those who didn’t like history, the Kings name was William 1st.
However, England was already a nation when William took to the throne and had been since 924 when King Aethelstan took over. Here is a list of those very early kings who had power when England was first established as a whole country, rather than a series of loose alliances as previous.
Aethelstan 924-939
Eadmund 939-946
Eadred 946-955
Eadwig 955-959
Eadgar 959-975
Edward The Martyr 975-978
Aethelred 2nd 978-1016
Cnut 1016-1035
Harold 1035-1040
Hathacnut 1035-1042
Edward The Confessor 1042-1066
Coins from these periods are all very collectible, some are very rare, whereas other are not as rare as you might think. You can buy various cut coins from as little as £50, though a full Penny in decent grade will set you back several hundreds.
We have recently picked up a lovely collection of rare early hammered coins, keep an eye on our website for these which should be uploaded in the next couple of weeks. We do however already have a very impressive selection and these can be viewed here.
